The new MenB vaccine - Now available in Shrewsbury

Who CAN have the Meningitis B vaccine?
The vaccine can be given to anyone over 2 months of age, but especially:
  • to prevent Meningitis B in those who have never had it.

Who SHOULD NOT have the vaccine?
  • Anyone who is immunocompromised. Eg leukaemia, lymphoma, or due to drugs such as oral steroids, cancer therapies, immunosuppressant medications like Methotrexate, Azathioprine and Cyclosporin.
  • If unwell in the preceding week. Eg temperature >38C
  • If there is a previous history of severe allergic reaction to vaccinations or to any of the ingredients in the vaccine

How is it administered?
  • It is administered like the other childhood vaccines. It is an intramuscular injection given in the arm or leg.


Vaccine Schedule - 2 doses +/- booster
Infants Aged 6 months - 2 years
  • please discuss

Children Aged 2 - 10 years
  • Two doses - First dose,  then 2nd dose 2 months later.
  • Booster- Need for booster doses not yet established.

Adolescents (from 11 years of age) and adults
  • Two doses - First dose, 2nd dose 1 month later.
  • Booster- Need for booster doses not yet established.
